PREVENTATIVE HEALTH CARE AND MALARIA
Though malaria is not a high risk for visits to the Peruvian Amazon of a
few weeks, consideration of preventative measures is wise.
The U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends either mefloquine
(Lariam) or Malarone as the malaria risk preventatives of choice.
Malarone is taken daily while Lariam is taken only once weekly.
Unpleasant side-effects are rare, and neither Lariam nor malarone show any
special
contraindications when taken in conjunction with Ayahuasca.
Doxycycline is NOT recommended as a malaria preventative in conjunction
with Ayahuasca.
B-complex vitamins commenced three days before arrival may reduce
frequency of insect bites.
Bring an effective insect repellent. The standard recommended repellent
is DEET (30-35%) which is not considered hazardous in short term use.
DEET is much more effective and lasts longer per application than the
alternatives.
Grapfruit seed extract is reputed to offer protection agains insect
bites and malaria.
Skin So Soft lotion is an effective insect repellent for many people and
is pleasant and safe to use.
Jungle Juice Insect Repellent manufactured by NutriBiotic contains clove
oil, lemon oil, and peppermint oil but no harsh or toxic chemicals.
It must be re-applied more often than DEET, but is entirely organic and
safe with no known harmful effects. Other organic repellents
contain citronella which is also effective. These can be found in
sporting goods stores, alternative health stores, and many pharmacies.
Yellow fever, hepatitis A and B, cholera, and typhoid vaccinations are
NOT needed unless you plan travel to more remote jungle destinations.
One is highly unlikely to contact any of these diseases during a month or
so in Peru.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY THE INFO on medications.
These drugs and medications are known to cause dangerous side effects when taken
in conjunction with Ayahuasca. Use of these substances should be discontinued
and sufficient clearance time should be allowed before consumption of Ayahuasca.
If in doubt, consult your physician.
I. Any medicine containing MAO inhibitors (neural enzyme monoamine oxidase)
or SSRI's, i.e. antidepressants such as Prozac, Effexor, Zoloft, Wellbutrin,
etc. These can cause a 'serotonin syndrome' involving elevated blood pressure,
coma and possibly death when taken in combination with Ayahuasca. It is
recommended that such medications be suspended under a physician's guidance at
least six weeks prior to taking Ayahuasca. Some medications may clear the
system sufficiently in less time. Consult your physician to be sure. St.
John's wort should also be suspended in advance of work with Ayahuasca. Many
patients have found it unnecessary to resume such medications after treatment
with Ayahuasca (see "Ayahuasca and Serotonin Normalization; the UDV Study").
II. Sedatives, tranquilizers, antihistamines, narcotics, amphetamines,
asarone/calamus, tryptophan (high doses), tyrosine (high doses), phenelanine
(high doses), macromerine, decongestants, allergy medications, cold medications,
diet pills, methylphemidate, asthma-inhalers, meperidine, levopoda, dopamine,
carbamazipine, some antihypertensive medications, sympathomimetic amines (acting
directly and/or indirectly), including pseudoephedrine and ephedrine.
III. Do not drink fermented alcohol or use drugs such as MDMA (ecstacy),
cocaine, heroin, XTC, 2CB, mescaline and/or other phenethylamines within two
days of ceremony.
If you use any of these substances, or take any prescribed drugs, please let me
know All information is held in strict confidentiality and is required to
insure your safety and welfare.
AYAWASKA IN THE AMAZON
Ayahuasca presents at least three potentially beneficial therapeutic and
personal growth applications.
The normal course is one of personal challenge and struggle punctuated by
flashes of agony and ecstacy as one works through the process of purgation and
renewal. Physical discomfort is common and one often is besieged by inescapable
images and thoughts of matters and issues one would prefer to avoid. This forced
confrontation brings catharsis, and eventually closure to many of the
psychological burdens most of us carry with us in our lives.
Those familiar with Ayahuasca know that the lasting benefits begin to unfold
after the immediate and most profound effects of the drink have passed. For
days, weeks and months afterward, the blessings of Ayahuasca will be received,
one step at a time, if one is receptive and attentive to the life lessons
revealed. These blessings manifest in many ways, specific to the varied human
needs presented to the medicine.
Among the positive processes initiated by the Ayahuasca cleansing
experience are:
Catharsis.Catharsis is precipitated on the physical level as a
vehicle for cleansing and detoxification. Spiritual catharsis occurs at a deeper
level as Ayahuasca purges negativity, toxins, personal "baggage" and "garbage"
accumulated through one's lifetime. The pace and depth of this process depends
greatly on the willingness of the individual to surrender ego and pride to
achieve the blessings of cleansing and rebirth.
Abreaction.Abreaction is a process of regression back to the
situation or source of a problem or trauma. This process allows one to relive
the experience to gain new understanding and insights enabling resolution or
closure. The frequent result is a liberation from guilt or fear or whatever
psycho-spiritual forces might have bound the individual previously. The process
often results in candid re-evaluation of one's life course with strong tendency
and resolution to pursue positive changes to improve one's life with renewed
purpose and mission.
Spiritual Realization. Most people who experience Ayahuasca in a
positive and nurturing environment report some sort of spiritual experience.
While these experiences certainly have a personalized aspect based on the
individual's past experiences and attitude toward religion and spirituality,
there is also a remarkably consistent nature and character to the Ayahuasca
experience when undertaken in proper set and setting. The character of the
experience, and especially the visionary icons encountered, are greatly
influenced by the cultural context in which the experience occurs, and equally
so by the specific plants used, regardless of their chemical composition.
The quintessential Ayahuasca experience probably cannot be fully
realized outside the natural and cultural environment of Amazonia. The reason is
simple...all the inherently natural organic and cultural links are present.
Here the spiritual connection between the plants and the eco-cultural union
which brought the unique brew into existence is strongest and most profound.
That the Amazonian plants are endowed with a special magico-spiritual dimension
in their natural habitat is evident to those who have experienced both in situ
(in the natural habitat) and ex situ (outside the natural habitat) types of
Ayahuasca experiences. This is not to say, of course, that highly beneficial
personal results cannot be achieved using Ayahuasca in other circumstances.
Holistic Healing. Ayahuasca has the noted capability to accomplish
often seemingly-miraculous healing of Mind, Body, and Spirit. Not every person
comes to this medicine with the same needs. The magic of Ayahuasca rests in its
ability to find, focus, diagnose and heal the causes of one's personal problems
or illness as well as the symptoms. The cleansing and healing is deep, to the
core, and is therefore likely to have a lasting positive effect on the patient.
A time-honored aspect of seriously focused work with Ayahuasca is a
special diet serving to cleanse and prepare the body, mind, and spirit to open
widely to the positive healing energy of Mother Ayahuasca. There is
considerable variation in details of the diet as practiced in the Peruvian
Amazon by many vegetalistas and curanderos. Therefore these comments should be
understood to reflect the general commonalities of "la dieta" and not construed
to be absolute in all details.
Most maestros recommend that one commence the diet at least three days
before the first Ayahuasca ceremony and continue for two or three days after the
last.
Alcohol and pork should be abstained longer since they may have
undesirable consequences when combined with Ayahuasca.
Commonly shared characteristics of most vegetalista diets include
abstinence from alcohol, sugar, salt, oils, pork, fat, and spices. These
substances may interfere with one's sensitivity and uptake of Ayahuasca so they
are limited or abstained to heighten one's receptivity to the medicine.
Abstinence from sexual orgasm is also an integral part of this diet. This is an
important required for two reasons. First sexual abstinence conserves vital
energy needed to engage the challenges Ayahuasca sometimes poses. Secondly
temporary sexual abstinence from sexual activity and thoughts allows one to
focus on the more profoundly spiritual dimensions of one's being.
It is said in the Amazon that Ayahuasca has a jealous spirit. This is a
culture-bound concept which often seems strange to the western mind. How could
a plant considered sacred also be jealous? One has to step outside the usual
human concept of jealousy to understand what is meant by this. It simply means
that the conscious spirit of Ayahuasca desires our undivided attention when in
Her presence. Temporary sexual abstinence might also be seen as an offering of
one's higher intention to the Divine. Human sexuality is a dynamic aspect of
the human nature and spiritual experience
Everything in the diet is a choice, and one answers only to themselves and the
medicine in whatever decision they make.
Pork is considered to be impure because of what pigs eat, and is not eaten
by diligent Ayahuasca practitioners. Complete abstinence from pork and lard for
at least two weeks prior to the first ceremony is strongly recommended and
should continue for two weeks after the last ceremony.
In the Peruvian Amazon, the most rigorous shamanic diet consists of small
scaly fishes boiled with rice, plantains and yuca (manioc). No salt, sugar,
oil, ají (hot chili) or sexual activity is allowed during weeks or months of
jungle isolation from the outside world. This is the diet undertaken by
apprentices hoping to become shamans. It is difficult even for seasoned jungle
people, and few succeed in keeping to it for more than a few weeks. The social
and sexual segregation required is the primary reason so few diet for long
periods. It is not necessary to enter this demanding dietary regimen to
undertake personal cleansing and spiritual transformation with Ayahuasca under
the guidance of shamanic healers (curanderos).
In the initiatory diet for those seeking personal cleansing and healing,
the diet is not as rigorous and may include light seasoning, fish, chicken,
fruits and vegetables.
The holistic cleansing benefits and visionary experiences are greatly
enriched by a commitment to the diet, for such reflects your personal INTENT,
which is the most important personal factor in work with Ayahuasca.
